When it comes to car maintenance, checking your tyre size might not be the most glamorous task—but it’s one of the most important. Whether you’re replacing a worn-out tyre, switching to winter tyres, or just doing some research, knowing your tyre size ensures safety, performance, and proper fit.
Luckily, checking your tyre size is quick and easy once you know where to look. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you find it.
Your tyre size is printed right on the sidewall of the tyre itself. It looks something like this:
205/55 R16 91V
Let’s break that down:
205 – This is the width of the tyre in millimetres.
55 – This is the aspect ratio, or the height of the tyre sidewall as a percentage of the width.
R – This stands for “Radial,” which is the most common tyre construction type.
16 – This is the diameter of the wheel rim in inches.
91V – This is the load index and speed rating.
Look at the Sidewall
Walk up to your car and check the side of the tyre. Look for a series of numbers and letters just like the example above.
Check All Tyres
It’s a good idea to check all four tyres. Sometimes, especially if a previous owner replaced them, the sizes might not match. Ideally, all tyres should be the same size unless specified otherwise by your car manufacturer.
Refer to Your Owner’s Manual
Can’t find the size or want to double-check? Your vehicle’s owner’s manual will have the correct tyre specifications.
Check the Driver’s Side Door Frame
Open the driver’s side door and look for a sticker on the inside of the frame. This usually lists the recommended tyre size along with the correct tyre pressure.
Using the wrong tyre size can affect your car’s handling, braking distance, fuel efficiency, and even safety systems like ABS. It’s also essential when shopping for new tyres online or at your local garage—so getting it right is key.
